The historic buildings of Anaheim, the oldest city in Orange County, are famously gorgeous. They date back to the mid-1950s and many haven't changed a bit. Some are open to the public, a real step back in time. A large proportion of Brits to go Anaheim to experience Disneyland. But there's plenty more to this town than adults dressed as giant mice.
-
California Adventure Park, with its Tower of Terror and Paradise Pier
-
The excellent downtown Anaheim Certified Farmers Market and Craft Fair
-
Strut your funky stuff at The Grove of Anaheim, a top nightclub
Muzeo is a new kid on the Anaheim museum block, a brilliantly quirky place showing exhibitions of strange, weird and wonderful stuff like frogs, chocolate and blues music. Great fun, and always thought-provoking.
Seal Beach, near Anaheim, has the second longest wooden pier in California, an impressive feat in a state where incredibly long wooden piers are the done thing.
It's museumgate... the attractive, spotless Richard Nixon Library museum is in nearby Yorba Linda delivers an 'interesting' view of history, glossing over the infamous Watergate affair all but completely, making it much more interesting than it might otherwise be. At the other end of the scale, explore the city Marketplace for low cost, high value shopping, food and fun, a taste of the real Anaheim. If you're flagging in the heat, having 'done' Disney to death, treat yourself to a spa treatment at Burke Williams Day Spa and chill out ready for your next big California adventure. Or take a leisurely paddle in the gentle waves at the child-friendly Marina Park near pretty Ventura Harbour.
Worn out with all the glitz and noise? If you'd rather enjoy peace and quiet than theme park hell, The Mission San Juan Capistrano is a delightfully mellow and cool place, one of the state's oldest Spanish missions and a lovely place to sit and mellow-out for a while. Another antidote to theme park excesses is the wonderfully quaint downtown Anaheim itself, a rollercoaster and Mickey Mouse free-zone including an enormous gourmet food court and open fields where the locals chill and relax, the city's quarterly city art walk, ice rink and plenty of beautiful architecture.
