Contemporary Las Vegas is astonishing. At night, it is a brilliant cluster of jewels of all shapes, sizes, and colours, glowing in the middle of a vast, black velvet canopy.
The Strip is a bit like Blackpool but seriously amped up. It's incredibly glitzy. But hang a left or right and you'll soon run across the real Vegas behind the glitter, more laid back, more real, on a more human-scale. Off-Strip highlights include downtown Las Vegas, an area fast being rejuvenated and nowhere near as seedy as it used to be. This is the home of the Mob Museum, a fascinating insight into the nasty world of organised crime. Head off the Strip to sample food from the town's fabulous food trucks. You'll find them downtown on the second Saturday of every month at Vegas StrEATS, a street festival with funky live music, art and delicious local dishes.
Fancy seeing Las Vegas in all its glittery glory from way up high? Get behind the controls at Sky Combat Ace and fly your own aerobatic plane to do exactly that, including loops and barrel rolls. It's a brilliant nail-biter of an experience. If the casinos don't deliver quite enough thrills, you can always Climb Red Rock Canyon. It's one of the most challenging and popular climbing spots in the south west, quite apart from being a stunning sight with its massive deep red sandstone cliffs and bizarre rock formations.
