Make sure to grab a bite to eat before heading back on the road, you’ll find quaint cafes and fine dining options with awesome ocean views.
It's up to you where you start your Highway 1 adventure, you have two epic cities to choose from. Start your journey in lively San Francisco and cross the mighty Golden Gate Bridge. Make sure you visit notorious Alcatraz Island, ride the city's antique cable cars and enjoy shopping and dining in Union Square. Alternatively, you could begin your trip in the south in San Diego. Visit Coronado Beach, renowned as one of the best in California, and experience the delights of the city's historic Gaslamp Quarter.
If you’re a wine enthusiast then Santa Ynez is the perfect spot for you. Home to a fantastic collection of local wines made from the finest grapes near the ocean in Lompoc, this is a perfect place to unwind in a relaxing environment. Here you’ll find a number of art galleries, wine-tasting rooms, boutiques and amazing restaurants making it the ideal place to stop off for a short break before heading back on the road.
An epic Highway 1 journey wouldn’t be complete without visiting the incredible Big Sur. Just when you thought you had seen the best views on offer, Big Sur blows everything out of the water. As you venture round every bend, become hypnotised by the epic scenery, brimming with bottomless canyons, ragged mountains, pine forests and sandy beaches. Become captivated by the rare purple sand of Pfeiffer State Beach, with a lilac hue that is derived from the manganese garnet deposits found in the surrounding rocks. Add this to the crashing waves and the contrast is striking and certainly a site to behold. You don’t just take a trip along Highway 1, Highway 1 takes you.
