Humbling spirituality and architectural magnificence
The Chapel of the Holy Cross is one of Sedona’s most iconic sights. Built in 1956 by Marguerite Brunswig Staude, local sculptor and former student of renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright, the chapel has a surprisingly contemporary appeal despite being over 50 years old. After visiting New York in 1932, Marguerite said she was inspired to build such a chapel as you could see a cross on the Empire State Building when viewed from a certain angle.
The chapel is located on the southern side of Twin Buttes and appears to triumphantly rise out of the dramatic red rock surroundings. As it's built on a twin-pinnacle spur around 250 feet high, the chapel offers spectacular views across Sedona, particular at sunset when the landscape glows a deep amber colour. Regardless of faith, all are welcome to visit and most do for the views and stunning architecture alone. In 2007 Arizonians voted the Chapel of the Holy Cross one of the Seven Man-Made Wonders of Arizona…and it’s easy to see why.
