The history of Solvang
Found in the heart of Solvang the Elverhoj Museum was once home to one of Solvang’s most artistic families and is now a community museum devoted to the rich history of Solvang, the Danish-American pioneer spirit and the colourful heritage of Denmark…quite the handful. You might be wondering what the name “Elverhoj” stands for. Pronounced “Elverhoy”, this fancy word is taken from Denmark’s most famous folk play written in 1828 and involves the story of a king’s visit to the night world of the dancing female wood-spirits and her forest friends.
Take your time in exploring this historic, hand-crafted structure and enjoy the finely carved redwood entry door, the hand-painted panels and the ornamental wrought ironwork. The Elverhoj is one of the few museums outside of Denmark devoted to the Danish culture and the Danish-American experience.
