Discover Death Valley's mysterious moving rocks
Discover one of the world’s most talked about geological phenomena’s – the moving rocks of Racetrack Valley. The Racetrack is a 3 mile long, 2 mile wide dry lakebed and is a place of barren beauty and eerie mystery. On arrival at the Grandstand parking area, take the short walk out to the actual Grandstand (an outcrop of quartz monzonite) where you’ll find spectacular views of the Racetrack.
For the best views of the rocks and their tracks drive 2 miles south of the Grandstand then walk at least half a mile toward the southeast corner. No one has ever seen the rocks move but the tracks they leave in their wake are clear evidence of activity. Many theories have tried to explain the mystery of the moving rocks, but none have ever been confirmed. Perhaps the most plausible theory suggests that, due to erosion, rocks tumble to the ground from the surrounding mountains. Then a combination of rain (at least ½ inch) and strong winds cause the rocks to glide across the desert floor.
